Davison C of E High School for Girls, Worthing visits Berlin, 15th – 19th October 2014

This was a cross-curricular History and German trip with some students focusing more on the historical and cultural aspects of Berlin while others were keen to improve their linguistic skills. Some activities were done together such as the informative guided walking tour on the first day and the incredibly moving and educational visit to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Other outings were in two groups with the historians visiting the DDR museum for example while the linguists spent the morning in a German high school working with the students there. Everyone joined in with the social aspects of the trip alongside a group of German students and great fun was had by all at the bowling evening and last night meal out.

‘Sachsenhausen was a very interesting and emotional experience.’ Becky

‘I enjoyed the Scavenger Hunt with the German students a lot!’ Madeline

Birmingham's visit to Santa Catalina school in Jaén

After an early start the students arrived in in Málaga, here they enjoyed lunch on the beach and visited the famous Picasso gallery, giving them a flavour of artistic Spanish life. That evening they travelled to Jaén, their base for the trip and spent the evening having a look around Jaén and settling in to the hotel.

The following day was spent in Granada, a short drive through the Sierra Nevada where the students experienced a taste of the Moorish culture and architecture. They had time to visit the famous Alhambra Palace, the Science Park and browse the distinctive shopping streets looking for souvenirs.

Davison Church of England High School for Girls visits the Beethoven Gimansium School in Berlin for the first time!

This was a joint trip for students studying either History or German and was a perfect combination for enhancing knowledge on both subjects. The Beethoven Gymansium School proudly hosted the UK students and provided lots of the opportunities for the students to practise their German!

The students began their visit with a guided tour of the vibrant city of Berlin, this was combined with a visit to the East Side Gallery and finished off with a fun game of bowling with the German students.

The following morning the students visited the Deutsche Historisches Museum and took part in the camera challenge, showcasing their creative skills and finished with a German film, Lola.

Saturday and the last full day of the trip was spent at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, a former Nazi camp near Berlin, giving the students an emotional piece of German history. After the visit the students had time to do some shopping in the centre of Berlin and finished the trip with a tasty meal in a typical German restaurant with their new German friends.

The final day, Sunday, was spent visiting the impressive TV Tower and admiring the views of this exciting capital city before travelling back to England.

‘Danke schön to our rep, Tom, he made our trip run smoothly and we couldn’t have done it without him!’  Kate Cooper, Teacher of MFL, Davison C of E High Schooo for Girls, Worthing.
